Ju Hao isn't such a great companion, mainly because his Epics are Buccaneer and Privateer based. A Swashbuckler should, generally, not have Vengeance Strike trained due to their chance of actually being hit by a melee unit being fairly low. For that reason, try to stay away from Vengeance Strike with him, and choose Second Chance and Flanking instead. Second Chance is obviously helpful since he will be missing a lot as a Swashbuckler. Definitely choose Flanking, even if you aren't a melee class yourself. When Ju Hao joins the fight, set up yourself and your companions in a way that he will be able to flank an enemy just about every turn, thus gaining an extra hit. Flanking is weaker than normal hits, but it's still an extra one, and the more hits the better!
